Why Tobacco??

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death.

Secondhand smoke is the 3rd leading cause of preventable death.

Tobacco kills more people than AIDS, drugs, homicides, fires,
and auto accidents combined.

  • Besides lung cancer, tobacco use also causes increased risk for cancer of the mouth, nasal cavities, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, uterine cervix, and myeloid leukemia. (Source: Cancer Prevention and Early Detection 2005)



90% of adult tobacco users started at or before the age of 18.

Each year 700 Wyoming kids under 18 become daily smokers.

Each year 33,000 Wyoming kids are exposed to secondhand
smoke at home.

Each year, Wyoming spends $136 million in health care costs
directly attributable to smoking.

Wyoming has double the national average for spit tobacco use
among adults and youth.

In Wyoming the tobacco industry spends $43.9 million to
market their product each year.

70% restaurants in Wyoming that are 100% smokefree. (2006)

75.3% BRFSS respondents who reported smoking not allowed anywhere in their Wyoming homes.(2005)
